Polio changed Tom Cantrell’s life when he was just 18 months old, so he has a long history of benefiting from the services of the Independent Living Center.
Over the years the Center provided Tom with many helpful interventions. Of late those include audio books, a Kindle, and a magnifier that enlarges print and reflects it on a screen, making it possible for him to read documents.
Tom often attends a monthly meeting hosted by the Center where he learns about innovative technology that can further improve his lifestyle. One such improvement the Center provided is a computer program that lets Tom type text, send email, and complete Internet searches through voice command.
“Try the Center out,” Tom encourages others. “I’m real happy with the service. They are a great bunch of people to talk to and they’re willing to go out of their way to help. They actually treat you like you’re somebody.”
