ADVOCATES NEEDED!–COVID-19 Vaccinations
ADVOCATES NEEDED!
We are asking our peers with disabilities, advocates, and allies to join us in a campaign to demand Indiana prioritize vaccinating our peers with disabilities now!
CDC guidelines have recommended our peers with disabilities be given priority access to the COVID-19 vaccination during the first phase of a states’ vaccination plans. However, the state of Indiana, along with 28 other states, has yet to recognize or follow through with this priority status.
Last week Indiana announced it would bump our peers with disabilities from their original priority status further down the list. This includes people who are 65 and older. Many of our peers with disabilities have related health conditions that place them at high risk of developing life-threatening complications due to COVID-19.
At the current vaccination rates and priority designations, many Hoosiers with disabilities will still be waiting for their first vaccination well into March and April. If Indiana’s goal is to vaccinate those most at risk in the community, why are our peers with disabilities being pushed aside?
We have waited too long to be able to leave our homes safely. We can’t let the state shove us to the end of the line. Contact INSILC Volunteer, Teri Whitaker, to learn more about this advocacy effort! The Indiana Statewide Independent Living Council (INSILC) will provide interested individuals with tools and resources to take action.
